Overview: 87 North to exit 19, 28 West to 375, 375 ends at 212, take 212 west to Van Wagner Road (about 2 hours from NYC)
1. From Manhattan take West Side Highway to GW Bridge *UPPER LEVEL* to Palasades Pky (if you accidentally take lower level it's much harder to get on Palisades).
Take Palasades about 20 minutes to exit 9W (NY State Thruway North). Don't be thrown by earlier signs for route 9W -- you want EXIT 9W. Now go to step 2.
From Brooklyn/Queens, take Triboro Bridge to 287 west. Follow 287 across Hudson River, will become NY State Thruway (87 North) at some point.
From New Jersey take the GSP to 87N.
2. Follow NY State Thruway (87 North) it's about an hour to exit 19. Be warned: bathrooms are far apart, and as you approach exit 19 this is your last chance for reliable cellphone reception. After exit toll there are a myriad of options off of exit 19 -- navigate carefully to 28 West.
3. Follow 28 west about 10 minutes and don't drive faster than 50mph, there are a few speed traps. The exit for 375 / Woodstock is marked by a giant sign, impossible to miss. Take 375 to the end.
4. 375 ends at the intersection of 212. Take a left onto 212 (West) and voila, you're in Woodstock.
(From points North take 87 South to exit 20, turn left off the exit, go one block and turn right onto 212, then follow 212 until you hit Woodstock, then follow below:)
5. In the center of Woodstock there is a small green area with benches. Zero out your mileage counter there -- you've got about 8 miles to go.
6. Continue on 212 West through town. VERY IMPORTANT -- about 2.5 miles along, in Bearsville, 212 takes a right turn while route 45 is straight. The sign is confusing and seems to indicate a right turn that is too early. Take the SECOND right just over the little bridge to stay on 212. You'll immediately see a post office and a sign confirming you're still on 212. Around dusk and at night watch for critters! The road is lousy with deer, beavers, squirrels, hippies.
7. Follow 212 thru Shady and Lake Hill. After 4 or 5 winding miles you'll see a sign for Willow. When you pass the white church you're exactly 1/2 mile from Van Wagner Road. The sign for Van Wagner is small but it's easy to spot because there is a flagstone/bluestone dealer and a car repair place at the intersection. Also there's a big sign for the Willow Post Office. At night it's easy to spot because it's one of the few streetlights. Turn right on Van Wagner and you'll see a big field and barns on the left. The entrance is 35 Van Wagner, second driveway on the left.
8. If a large black dog charges toward you looking like the hound from hell, don't be afraid. His name is Mio, just let him smell you, and don't pet him right away. There is also a pidgeon named Stormy that likes to land on your head.
By Bus
You can take a Trailways bus from Port Authority to Woodstock.
You can take the same bus directly to the farm, except the Friday 7pm bus, which terminates in Woodstock. You must buy a ticket for Willow and tell the bus driver to let you off at the auto garage in Willow, 1/2 a mile past the white church in Willow (about 8 miles past the center of Woodstock). The farm is located behind the garage, The entrance is 35 Van Wagner, second driveway on the left.
